Democracy at Stenton JCR

Stenton Hall JCR is proud to be the official representative body of the residents in Stenton Hall. Part of the day to day functions of the JCR is to act in the best interest of the membership and we proudly sit on various other committees within the University to ensure that the Univeristy and the Union are acting in your best interests, which requires good representation. To ensure that you are properly represented we have a clear and stable democratic structure outlined below. If you have any questions or queries regarding democracy at Stenton, or want to get more involved with activities of the Committee, please email president@stentonjcr.co.uk

The Constitution

The constitution is a document which defines the organisation and outlines how it should operate, manage itself and any other rules that apply. It provides the foundation for all of the activities of the JCR; the Committee and the Membership are required to abide by it for the organisation to function properly. It can be amended by a vote of a General Meeting and it is the job of the President to ensure that it is kept up to date, accurate and available to members.

The constitution has currently been adopted by the JCR Committee, but requires further the approval of a General Meeting before it fully comes into force. This is expected to be discussed at the first General Meeting in the Autumn Term.

An electronic copy of the constitution can be found on this website on the policies page, or requested from the President. If you have any special requirements, please get in contact detailing what specification is required.

The JCR Committee

There are three tiers to the JCR Committee at Stenton Hall JCR; The Executives, The Officers and the Representatives. The Executives and Officers are elected in the Spring Term each year whilst the Representatives are elected from the new Membership in the Autumn Term. Below outlines roughly what each tier does and aims to achieve. The Committee meets regularly throughout the term and we are always willing to hear what you have to say. If you have any suggestions please e-mail secretary@stentonjcr.co.uk without delay!

The Executives

These include the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. Their main role is to oversee the management of the JCR and to keep the paperwork in order, such as minutes and the accounts. They also assist the Officers with their duties where they can so our events and activities run smoothly. Members of the Executive regularly attend working groups and other committees in the University and with the Union.

The Officers

The Officers include the Welfare Officers, The Social Officers and the Sports Officers. Each pair of Officers is responsible for managing their own department, although everyone on the Committee helps each other to benefit the members of the JCR, whether it is a Welfare Campaign or the latest Social!

The Representatives

The Representatives are elected to represent the views of the membership to the Executives and Officers so they can make the right decisions and act in the best interest of the membership. They are required to attend meetings of the Committee; so if you have something to say you should talk to your representative! Representatives also assist the officers and executives with their duties. We will be electing representatives from residents of Stenton for the academic year 2011/2012 in the autumn term.

General Meetings

The General Meeting is the highest authority in the JCR - this is where you get to input into what the Committee have (or not have) been doing during their time in office. It also has to make very big decisions that affect all members, such as the annual budget which is presented at the start of the Autumn Term.

There are typically two General Meetings a term and Members are welcome to turn up and share their thoughts as well as vote and propose motions. These meetings are often used to update the membership on what has been going on in the JCR and other issues that may be affecting you as well as giving you a sneak preview of events to come over the next term - so they are always worth turning up to! Members of the Committee also report what they have been doing since the last meeting and welcome input from you about where they be directed in the future!

Policies and motions also get discussed at General Meetings; these direct the JCR Committee to act in a certain way if accepted at the General Meeting. Any member of Stenton Hall may propose, second a motion or vote on motions at General Meetings - you have the final say! For more information about motions, polcies and procedure reguarding General Meetings, including submission, please e-mail president@stentonjcr.co.uk.
